Defeat means Bradford’s billiards team are vulnerable in Yorkshire Inter-District League

Wayne Cooper defeated Yorkshire snooker champion Mikey Tomlinson 2-0

BRADFORD’S billiards team completed their Yorkshire Inter-District League fixtures with a 7-5 defeat at a very strong Harrogate team.

In a topsy-turvy first game, Paul Devitt led 23-0, only to trail 86-23 following a break of 31 and several smaller contributions from his opponent Stephen Crosland.

But Devitt responded with a 57 to to reduce the deficit to 86-80 and then continued his revival to win 200-118 and take Bradford into a 3-1 lead.

A break of 49 gave Steve Wilman an early advantage in the next match but Harrogate’s Tom Halliday dug in to win a close contest 200-187, leaving Bradford 5-4 in front.

Bradford captain Stephen Kershaw also had an early break of 31 but Harrogate’s Jonathan Marwood was in fine form, breaks of 56, 36 and 32 helping to take the game 200-64, giving Harrogate overall victory.

Bradford still lead the table with 55 points, having completed all their fixtures, while Harrogate have 50 with one match still to play and Huddersfield No 1 have 43 with two to play, so both could still overhaul the front-runners.

Our Deepest Sympathies

Thornton Class of ’85 Martin Smith and Paul Martin and Richard Bakes

Paul Martin

It is with great sadness that a good long term school friend of mine who has played in the South Bradford League for many years has passed away after a long battle with Cancer.

Paul, 48, was a member of Clayton Liberal club for over 30 years and played for the club during this time. He passed away on 14th February and his funeral takes place this Friday, 3rd March at 1.30pm at St John’s Church, Clayton, followed by cremation at Scholemoor.

He had a larger than life personality, always good for a laugh and was certainly someone who was popular during our school time together and during his life since that time, a great character who continued his popularity throughout the leagues and in the village he grew up in.

Paul will be sadly missed and condolences are sent from the snooker fraternity and on behalf of me and our old school friends to his family for their loss. It was a pleasure to have known him.

RIP Paul Martin

Richard Bakes

Yorkshire Inter-District Billiards League leaders Bradford show Doncaster no mercy

Pairs partners Kevin Firth, left, and Wayne Cooper will meet in a mouth-watering Bradford Snooker Championship quarter-final

BRADFORD’S billiards team are top of the Yorkshire Inter-District League after thrashing bottom-of-the-table Doncaster 9-2.

Paul Devitt was in fine form for Bradford, and breaks of 38 and 27 in successive visits, sped him to a 200-23 victory over 87-year-old Branson Hoole to give Bradford a 3-0 lead.

Stephen Kershaw and Dave Palmer never showed their best form in the second game but a break of 31 from the Bradford captain squeezed him in front towards the end for a 200-189 triumph, which improved the home team’s advantage to 6-2.

Steve Wilman was in good form and gave Doncaster’s Graham Guest no chance, concluding the game with an unfinished break of 34 for a 200-52 win.

Bradford’s last game of the season next month is away to second-placed Harrogate, who trail them by six points with a game in hand.

Huddersfield No 1 remain third, 16 points behind the leaders, but with three games to play.

Bradford Snooker Events Next Round Draws 2017

10 x times champion faces pairs partner Kevin Firth for a second year running.

Hi Guys,

the draws that were made last night at Undercliffe before the Bradford match.

Please note that this season the semi finals will not be played at neutral venues, as a result of the problems encountered last season in trying to fix these up due to varying factors, with last years final being played far too late after the season had finished. I’ll review this again in due course.

If you can make contact early and get the matches played as soon as possible, with a view that if all matches are played in either competition I will look to bring next round matches forward.

At this stage the Singles semis and final will be at Great Horton Con Club, and I will assess where to have the pairs final once these matches are complete.

Good luck guys
Rich

Mick Cockcroft marks call-up with impressive Bradford billiards display

Kevin Firth made a 89 break in his second frame.

BRADFORD’S billiards team enjoyed an impressive 8-5 victory over title-chasing Harrogate at Great Horton Conservative Club as they repeated their previous week’s Yorkshire Inter-District League result against fellow contenders Huddersfield.

It could have been even better, as Steve Wilman led from early in his game against Harrogate opponent Tom Halliday. A home win looked likely until, from 60 behind, Halliday ran in three 20-plus breaks in rapid succession before closing out the game 200-172 to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage.

Mick Cockcroft responded to a late call-up to play his first match for Bradford for several years and put in a great performance, overwhelming Harrogate captain Tim Godolphin 200-103 to edge his side into a 5-4 lead.
