Right on Cue: Saying goodbye to gentleman Gordon

Gordon Craven will always be a Bradford Legend.

Gordon Craven will always be a Bradford Legend.

THE funeral of Gordon Craven, the only player to have won a Bradford snooker title in four different decades, will be held at Scholemoor Crematorium on Monday (11.30am).

The 88-year-old, a legend of the amateur Bradford snooker scene over the last 50 years, died after a lengthy illness.

He won the Bradford snooker singles crown in 1967, 1973 and 1983 and added the Bradford Snooker Pairs Championship with Chris Firth in 1991.

Best remembered for playing many years at Horton Grange WMC and Great Horton WMC, Craven represented Bradford at county level as well.

He also played at Great Horton Conservative Club well into his 70s, even managing a clean sweep of five trophies in one particularly memorable season in the Bradford Conservative League.

Holder Cooper bows out as Farmer and Walsh progress

champHOLDER Wayne Cooper failed to make it through the qualifying stages of the Yorkshire Snooker Championship at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.

However, two players from Bradford did advance to the quarter-finals – Cooper’s representative team-mate Lewis Walsh and surprise package Daniel Farmer.

Cooper was knocked out 3-1 by Castleford opponent Mikey Tomlinson in the last 16, while Walsh had a nail-biting 3-2 victory against Josh Walker.

Farmer, who plays for Haworth Cons in the Conservative League, fully deserved his place after wins against Joe Markie (3-1), Neil Connor (3-0) and Paul Lawson 3-2.

Kevin Firth shared frames in Bradford No 1 snooker team’s shock defeat at Ossett No 1

BRADFORD’S billiards team ended a run of poor results in the Yorkshire Inter-District League with victory against the leaders.

But the district’s two snooker sides, heading their respective divisions, came unstuck away from home.

Huddersfield No 1 still lead the billiards table by seven points from Harrogate, but found a determined Bradford side in no mood to roll over, Stephen Kershaw and his side gaining a 4-3 away victory.

Huddersfield’s Matthew Peaker produced breaks of 51 and 49 to lead Paul Devitt 199-44 before back-to-back runs of 29 and and 40 from Devitt added some respectability to the 200-113 scoreline and provided much-needed encouragement for the team.
