Hey’s Trophy winners Undercliffe Cricket Club B – from left: Paul Davey, Phil Gaunt, Damien Bentley and Dave Stirk

UNDERCLIFFE Cricket Club B fought off the challenge of Laisterdyke WMC A at East Ward Labour Club to win the Hey’s Trophy.

Conceding 50 points on the handicap in Bradford Billiards & Snooker Association’s snooker team event, Undercliffe set off well.

Paul Davey beat Martin Glen 80-33 and 69-24, while Dave Stirk edged two cagey frames against Dean Parker 69-48 and 60-52 to put their side 71 in front at the interval.

Paul Wood pulled back 36 points against Damien Bentley, winning their opener 64-28, but this was cancelled out by Phil Gaunt taking his opening frame 76-29 against Bernard McLoughlin.

Bentley made up for the first-frame loss to win 71-48, while Undercliffe captain Gaunt brought the curtain down on the match with a final-frame 51-23 success.

Devitt beaten by the bell in thrilling billiards final

Trevor Kershaw, left, and Paul Devitt before their Bradford Billiards Championship final, which Kershaw won by a point

Trevor Kershaw, left, and Paul Devitt before their Bradford Billiards Championship final, which Kershaw won by a point

THERE was high drama in the final of the Bradford Billiards Championship at Great Horton Conservative Club.

Trevor Kershaw won the title, beating Paul Devitt by one point after being saved by the bell.

The players traded 30 breaks in the first hour and, without ever finding their best form, play in general was very cautious in what became a low-scoring match.

Kershaw led 157-126 at the interval and did most of the scoring on the resumption, building up a lead of over 70 at one stage.

Yet for most of the session, Devitt was rarely more than a decent break behind and it came with less than 15 minutes to go when he made a 45 – the highest of the night – to get back to within 20 points.

Further chances for both players were scarce as the clock ran down and the tension mounted.

There were few risks taken, some unlucky misses and the odd fluke but, with less than two minutes to go, Devitt – still nine points in arrears – got another scoring opportunity and, having scored eight, he was left with a regulation red.

However, he hesitated momentarily on the shot, only for the bell to sound before he struck the cue ball, leaving his opponent, who had led for most of the game, with a single-point victory to become champion for the second time, having also won in 2008.

Bradford No 2 back in county snooker’s top flight

Captain Hanif Rafiq's side secures Division 2 title and promotion.

Captain Hanif Rafiq’s side secures Division 2 Title and promotion to top flight Division

BRADFORD No 2 came away from their Yorkshire Inter-District League match at Selby with a 3-3 draw, which was not only enough to secure the visitors promotion back to the top-flight but also give them the title.

The city second string team needed just one point to guarantee promotion, but two points would confirm them as champions, and this was achieved in the first match as a solid Peter Hamilton display gave him a 74-38, 70-30 victory against Harry Hall.

Boover Singh couldn’t get into his stride and went down 63-27 and 58-28 to J Barker, while captain Hanif Rafiq made a 59 clearance in winning 81-21, but opponent Darren Hawkins had the final say of a great season for Bradford with a 64-42 victory.

Bradford No 2, who are more than capable of challenging at the top end of the table, will be hoping for better fortune than the last time they were among the elite, and will be seeking a good early start.

Brothers are foes in Bradford semi-final

Mark Slater faces Wayne Cooper in the semi-finals of the Bradford Snooker Championship – a repeat of last year's final, which nine-times winner Cooper took 4-1

Mark Slater faces Wayne Cooper in the semi-finals of the Bradford Snooker Championship – a repeat of last year’s final, which nine-times winner Cooper took 4-1

THE draws for the Bradford Snooker Championships were made last week at the final of the South Bradford League snooker singles, and champion Jason Murgatroyd assisted with the draw.

Nine-time winner and holder Wayne Cooper (Undercliffe Cricket Club) was paired against Clayton Liberals’ Mark Slater in a repeat of last season’s final, which Cooper won 4-1.

In the other semi-final, brothers Gareth (Eccleshill Vic Cons) and Anthony (Harold Club) Green will face each other, with Gareth aiming to win his fifth title while Anthony is seeking his first, having been runner-up two years ago. These matches will both be played on Saturday, April 23 (7.45pm) at Great Horton Conservative Club.

In the pairs, the Green brothers, who were defending champions, were edged out 3-2 in their quarter-final by Undercliffe Cricket Club duo Josh Walker and Russell Morgan, who now face clubmates Cooper and Kevin Firth. Semi-finalists last season, John and Chris Wellham (Windhill Cons) aim to go at least one better when they face Eccleshill Vic Cons’ Lewis Walsh and Howard Mawson.

Dates for these matches have yet to be finalised.
