Greens take Bradford Snooker Pairs title number 5
Gareth and Anthony Green defeated defending champions Wayne Cooper and Kevin Firth in an epic Bradford Snooker Pairs Final at Great Horton Conservative Club to lift their fifth title.
Cooper and Firth have won the event 6 times together, with Cooper also winning it a further 4 times, twice with Donald Proctor, once with Lee Atkinson and once with Dean Parker, whilst Firth has won it previously with Dave Stirk, but the night belonged to the Green brothers after a tense finish.
This was a match with a lot of top quality Snooker from all four players and the match started with Gareth Green making a break of 43 to win the opener 73-14. Gareth then made a 31 break early in the second and Anthony stepped in with a break of 36 to go 2-0 up with a 74-32 frame win. The third frame took a similar pattern and again it was Gareth making a telling contribution with a break of 39 and an 84-19 success for a 3-0 lead at the break.
Cooper and Firth has done very little wrong and the Green brothers were decisive with their scoring and safety play.
Frame 4 saw a break of 34 from Cooper in taking it 76-16, and a tight fifth frame had Firth making a timely break of 30, but chances on both sides were missed at vital times to take the frame, but eventually Cooper and Firth took the crucial balls to win 58-42 and the comeback was really on.
A 3-0 lead for the Greens was soon wiped out and Cooper and Firth levelled the match at 3-3 with a 97-48 sixth frame win and set up a tense final frame.
Safety was paramount in the early stages with neither pairing wishing to gift the others an easy opportunity. Gareth stepped in under pressure and nailed some superb pots on his way to a 33 break, with Anthony picking off small breaks to ease away and finally take the match with a last from victory 86-17 to win a top class match 4-3.
