Windhill Conservative Club A were deserved winners of the Hey’s Trophy Snooker Team Championship, defeating Undercliffe Cricket Club A in the final at East Ward Labour Club.
Chris Metcalfe gave Windhill a great start by taking the first frame 54-30, but opponent Dave Stirk responded well with a break of 49 at the start of the second, although Metcalfe crucially potted the final four colours, leaving the Undercliffe player with a slender 76-59 advantage.
David Stirk (pictured) had the honour of the competition’s highest break, making a superb 114 in an earlier round at The Harold Club.
In the other match, Undercliffe’s Kevin Firth negotiated two frames against Craig Buchan 91-28 and 108-28, with a 32 break in the second, this taking nearly 50 per cent out of the handicap Undercliffe were giving away.
The final matches were a little closer, and Windhill always just managed to keep the aggregate points at a distance.
Adam Tipper edged both frames for Undercliffe, 56-55 and 56-44, twice building up a good lead, with opponent Jordan Cuthbert never giving up and fighting back in both frames.
Wayne Downey made a 31 break for Undercliffe in taking the first frame against Jamie Buchan 89-43, but Buchan stayed with Downey in the second, only going down 63-44, ensuring Windhill lifted the famous trophy.
