Our Deepest Sympathies

Thornton Class of ’85 Martin Smith and Paul Martin and Richard Bakes

Paul Martin

It is with great sadness that a good long term school friend of mine who has played in the South Bradford League for many years has passed away after a long battle with Cancer.

Paul, 48, was a member of Clayton Liberal club for over 30 years and played for the club during this time. He passed away on 14th February and his funeral takes place this Friday, 3rd March at 1.30pm at St John’s Church, Clayton, followed by cremation at Scholemoor.

He had a larger than life personality, always good for a laugh and was certainly someone who was popular during our school time together and during his life since that time, a great character who continued his popularity throughout the leagues and in the village he grew up in.

Paul will be sadly missed and condolences are sent from the snooker fraternity and on behalf of me and our old school friends to his family for their loss. It was a pleasure to have known him.

RIP Paul Martin

Richard Bakes

Yorkshire Inter-District Billiards League leaders Bradford show Doncaster no mercy

Pairs partners Kevin Firth, left, and Wayne Cooper will meet in a mouth-watering Bradford Snooker Championship quarter-final

BRADFORD’S billiards team are top of the Yorkshire Inter-District League after thrashing bottom-of-the-table Doncaster 9-2.

Paul Devitt was in fine form for Bradford, and breaks of 38 and 27 in successive visits, sped him to a 200-23 victory over 87-year-old Branson Hoole to give Bradford a 3-0 lead.

Stephen Kershaw and Dave Palmer never showed their best form in the second game but a break of 31 from the Bradford captain squeezed him in front towards the end for a 200-189 triumph, which improved the home team’s advantage to 6-2.

Steve Wilman was in good form and gave Doncaster’s Graham Guest no chance, concluding the game with an unfinished break of 34 for a 200-52 win.

Bradford’s last game of the season next month is away to second-placed Harrogate, who trail them by six points with a game in hand.

Huddersfield No 1 remain third, 16 points behind the leaders, but with three games to play.
