‘Cooperman’ holds his nerve to seal great campaign

champ

Fourth times Yorkshire Champion Bradford’s Wayne Cooper

WAYNE Cooper capped an outstanding season by winning the Yorkshire Snooker Championship title for a fourth time.

Having already partnered Kevin Firth to the Yorkshire Pairs title, with the duo helping Bradford No 1 to win the Yorkshire Inter-District League Division One crown as well, former professional Cooper also added the Bradford individual title for a ninth time.

Both Cooper and Gyles Behbood (Harrogate) are noted for their attacking play and high scores but the Yorkshire final at the Northern Snooker Centre involved much cagey play as neither wanted to give their opponent a sniff.

Instead of big breaks and free-flowing potting, the packed Leeds arena witnessed two very determined players who produced some fantastic tactical snooker, plus glimpses of brilliance.

WIBSEY Liberal Club A overcame The Leicester Street Club, formerly East Bowling Unity Club, to lift the E Rosse Hopkinson Plate Trophy at East Ward Labour Club.

There was plenty of support for both teams, and the spectators witnessed a tense finish to an excellent match.

Wibsey duo Ian Carradice and Tom Bell were up against Leicester Street’s Chris Richards and Tony Dawson respectively, and won three of the first four frames to trail by only 38 points at halfway.

Mark Hirst won his first frame for Wibsey against Andy Chisholm and Hirst’s team-mate, Damian Gallagher, defeated Steve Casey to overturn the deficit and lead by 33 points with two frames to play.

Casey took his final frame by 22 points, which at the time levelled the scores, as Chisholm led Hirst by 11 points at this juncture with only pink and black remaining.

EAST Ward Labour Club have won Bradford snooker’s prestigious Hey’s Trophy team competition after beating Eccleshill WMC A at Undercliffe Cricket Club.

Yet the matches throughout the final were evenly balanced and the result could have gone either way.

Eccleshill received a 50-point start on the handicap and stretched that lead after the first frame as Paul Young beat Paul Storey 82-35.

But parity was soon restored, with Storey turning the tables in the second frame with an impressive 82-16 success.

East Ward captain Aidan Rhodes found life tough against a determined Eric Poynton and, despite a 58-29 first-frame win for Rhodes, the Eccleshill player took the second 75-37 to leave his side with a slender 40-point lead at the interval.
