No cake-Walk but Greens win pairs title for third time

Brothers Gareth (left) and Anthony Green after winning the Bradford Snooker Pairs title for the third time

BROTHERS Gareth and Anthony Green have claimed the Bradford Snooker Pairs Trophy for the third time.

The Harold Club duo defeated Adam Tipper and Josh Walker (Undercliffe Cricket Club) in the final at Eccleshill Victoria Conservative Club.

Yorkshire handicap champion Walker was off to a great start, making a 71 clearance in the first frame to take it 92-34.

But the Greens hit back, with last season’s Bradford individual finalist Anthony replying with a 30 on the way to a 74-24 frame win which levelled the tie.

Four-time Bradford champion Gareth Green and Bradford handicap winner Tipper never really produced their best form throughout and frame three was scrappy as a result.

This eventually went to the Greens 62-36, while frame four – after an agreed rerack – also went the way of the Harold Club pair for a 3-1 victory to add to the titles they won in 2012 and 2013.

Mark Hirst, left, and first-time finalist Steve Wilman at the 2015 Bradford Billiards Championship final, Hirst winning for the seventh time in all and the third time in succession

MARK Hirst has become Bradford billiards champion for the seventh time – and the third in succession – after victory over first-time finalist Steve Wilman at Great Horton Conservative Club.

Former professional Hirst won the match 523-215 and set the pattern with an early break of 40, following this up a little later with a match-winning 165 to lead 287-74 at the interval.

Breaks of 49 and 63 followed in the second hour, with Wilman’s best chances coming too late in the contest to affect the result.

The final of the Bradford Snooker Pairs Championship takes place at Eccleshill Victoria Conservative Club on Saturday (7.45pm).

Josh Walker and Adam Tipper (Undercliffe Cricket Club) will be looking to defeat two-time champions Gareth and Anthony Green (Harold Club).

The match is the best-of-five frames and the doors to the club will be open from 7.30pm.
